Copenhagen Nightlife Guide
Copenhagen of Denmark has a thriving nightlife, which begins late and changes
fast – bars and clubs appear almost regularly, and only begin to fill up around
midnight (though on Fridays and Saturdays, things happen faster). Copenhagen
offers late licensing hours – though a swinging city during any time of the day,
you would have to wait until midnight to experience the true Copenhagen the
Danish are proud of.
The city has a diverse range of bars, clubs and restaurants catering to
different
styles and different tastes. You may want to dance to cutting-edge dance music,
or relax to world-class jazz, or reminisce to nostalgic love songs – whatever
it is, Copenhagen's nightlife has something for you.
Bars are typically open until 02:00 to 05:00, cafes until 01:00 to 02:00, and
clubs
well until 05:00. Many spots keep swinging until dawn. In addition, the dress code
is generally not strict. If you feel like grooving in a bridal gown, that is perfectly
OK – you won't be censured for it. Else, Danes generally dress down.
To have a taste of first-rate Danish food, drop by Café Victor in Ny Østergade
8.
It is a smart and friendly bistro/bar that is also popular with visiting film
stars. If you want to experience the friendly Irish atmosphere, The Dubliner on
Amagertorv 5 hits the spot. It is an Irish restaurant and music pub that offers
nightly live Irish folk and rock music, complete with Irish barmen and smiles.
For bars that defy convention, there is the original modern Scandinavian
restaurant
in Pilestraede 12-14, Konrad and its nearest neighbor Ketchup in Pilestraede 19;
along are BarStarten on Kapelvej 1,Ultimo on Hovedvagtsgade 8, and Zoo Bar on
Kronprinsensgade 7. These venues function as cafes and restaurants in the
morning, and when evening falls, they transform into bars. There is also this
very good chance that a DJ will appear by the end of the evening, and have
everyone living it up in the dance floor.
The well-loved pre-club joint Stereo Bar in Linnésgade 16a has a funky 70s
decorations. Its predominant offering is easy listening music, though other
types of music are not shunned. For beautiful harmony, the more underground
Stengade 30
on Stengade 18, Nørrebro, blends the best of international rock and dance acts with
the best of Danish rock.
You can't truly experience Copenhagen nightlife without stopping by the two
clubs renowned internationally – Rust in Guldbergsgade 8, and Vega in Enghavevej
40.
Both clubs have stellar international reputation and draw top-of-the-line DJs and
live acts.
The Rust complex is spread over three floors with a cocktail bar, main bar, a large dance floor, and an outdoor yard. Thursdays in Rust offer live rock and pop acts,
and good value food to boot. Queues last until 03:00 at weekends.
The Vega complex is housed in a grand 50s trade union building, with a reputation
for attracting big names like David Bowie, Kylie Minogue, and Prince. Vega
also features underground acts on its smaller stage.
